Hope the Primary Goes Well…Early Voting Slow Going!
August 25, 2008

I voted early. The line was long. About 30 folks in front of us. We took and hour from arrival to walking out of the Coral Gables Library.  My reaction? I  hope that the Primary goes a lot faster! If not the headlines will not be pretty.  I found that the process involving the new scanning machines was a bit cumbersome. Check in with the clerk, get the ID verified, a receipt is printed out and placed on a folder, advance to the privacy booth to fill in choices and then to the scanner.  Lots of help along the way provided by well trained poll workers but again it just went slow.  We did see many potential leave as they did not want to put a big time hole in their Sunday afternoon. We stuck it out realizing we’d never be able to spend the time on Tuesday. One reason that most early voters were longer in the booths was the huge number of Judges on the ballot. I thought I had a pretty good idea about those races but turns out there were more than a few that had me stumped. I follow courts on occasion and check out who has filed but there must have been ten contests featuring judges.  Slow or not I will be in line for General Election early voting. I just hope Sunday’s experience does not forecast a South Florida Election Day melt down.

The Oldies Just Keep on Coming!
August 23, 2008

For some reason I just could not get this out of my head this week. I really never much cared for Steely Dan but hey the lyrics have more substance in these latter days…………..

Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last
You wouldnt know a diamond
If you held it in your hand
The things you think are precious
I cant understand

Are you reelin in the years
Stowin away the time
Are you gatherin up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

We drove our youngest up to Tallahassee last Friday, got her settled in and got the call. “Can you be in Key West for Sunday’s 11pm newscast. Fay was approaching, a tropical storm, and our management wanted to activate what we call “the Key West Bureau.” Bottom line my wife and I got up at 5am Sunday morning drove to Miami. I was in town less than two hours when I got dropped off at Photographer Mike Zimmer’s House. Within minutes we were off to the Keys. 7Pm and we were gathering news on Duvall Street. Monday was the day of the storm, Tuesday was a story on the economic impact of $10 million dollars of lost revenue for Keys hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions. That story did not air, bumped by extensive coverage of Fay. Wednesday a break, a Miami Police officer shoots and kills a suspect and Fay poured all over the story, we were soaked twice. Thursday, off to Lake Okeechobee to find that due to Fay and other recent rains the lake is up to 12.22 feet. On the way home I get a call. It is my stepdaughter who we had left in Tallahassee. “Is this storm coming out way? she asked. I took out my lap top checked the radar and told her, “yep it is on the way.” Off on Friday, that morning she calls, “it’s here, nasty windy weather.”  Meanwhile Friday afternoon another band of Tropical Storm Fay pounds the house, Fay clean up postponed till Saturday.  Enough already Fay.

The Trip North…College round two!
August 14, 2008

We are off to Tallahassee with our youngest who is now a sophomore at Florida State!

We will not be alone on the Highway. This is the big weekend that parents take their kids back to college. We will see lots of folks we know in the service plazas along the way. It will be a nice break and we are most proud of our “sophmore.”  I will be back on station Monday! Keep an eye on things!

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
Were captive on the carousel of time
We cant return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game….

Lots going on…hope to get on track soon!

Thanks to OMC….It kind of sums up the week…

Edited for my viewers who will catch my drift!

Ringmaster steps up
Says the elephants left town
People jump and jive
And the clowns inch back around

T.V. news and cameras
There’s choppers in the sky
Marines, police, reporters
Ask the where, for and why

Pele yells “we’re outta here”
Seena says “right on”
Make your moves and starting grooves
Before they knew we’re gone

Jump into the Chevy
Headed for big lights,
Want to know the rest
Hey, buy the rights,

How bizarre
How bizarre
How bizarre

Ooh baby, (ooh baby)
It’s making me crazy, (it’s making me crazy)
Everytime I look around
Look around
Everytime I look around
Everytime I look around
Everytime I look around
It’s in my face
It’s in my face

Back to the real stuff next week!
